PNP Foundation successfully organized the Youth Climate and Environmental Awareness Debate at Youth Centre Nakivale under the theme:
“Climate and Environmental Awareness”
The activity brought together more than 90 direct participants, including youth representatives from Rubondo, Juru, and Basecamp, alongside local leaders, educators, and representatives from community-based and humanitarian organizations.

The debate was attended by a wide range of stakeholders, including:
- RWC III leaders from different zones
- Deputy Commandant, OPM Basecamp
- Deputy Headteacher, Nakivale Secondary School
- Teachers and community mobilizers
- Women Leader, Rubondo
- Youth Leaders from Juru and Rubondo
- Uganda Red Cross representative
- Executive Director, ABBCI
- Representatives from various NGOs and CBOs operating in Nakivale Refugee Settlement
- Community members and youth groups
Their presence demonstrated strong community interest in youth-led climate discussions and environmental action.
Purpose of the Debate
The debate aimed to:
- Increase climate and environmental awareness among young people
- Create a platform for youth voices and community dialogue
- Encourage youth participation in environmental protection and climate action
- Strengthen collaboration between young people, schools, leaders, NGOs, and community structures
- Promote leadership, confidence, research, and public speaking skills among youth
Highlights From the Debate
Throughout the debate, youth demonstrated a strong understanding of climate and environmental issues affecting Nakivale Refugee Settlement and surrounding communities.
Participants raised important concerns related to:
- Environmental degradation
- Deforestation
- Poor waste management
- Plastic pollution
- Wetland destruction
- Flooding and drainage challenges
- Community sanitation
- Climate change impacts on livelihoods and agriculture
Youth participants also proposed practical and long-term solutions, including:
- Tree planting and land restoration
- Community sensitization and awareness campaigns
- Proper waste disposal and recycling practices
- Stronger youth involvement in environmental decision-making
- Sustainable farming and environmental conservation practices
- Partnerships between leaders, schools, NGOs, and local communities
The debate further highlighted the importance of empowering youth as active contributors to climate resilience and sustainable community development.

Nakivale Secondary School emerged as the winning team, followed by youth representatives from Rubondo Sub Basecamp.
